diarrhoea among children under five by 50 per cent. Akinsote said this
to the

The Global Washing Hand Day 2013 with the theme: ``The Power is In Your Hands``, is to enlighten pregnant women on the importance of regular hand washing.

Akinsote, who works at St. Nicolas Hospital, Lagos, said that washing hand with soap and clean water could also reduce respiratory infections by 25 per cent.
He said that the day was aimed at increasing awareness and understanding the importance of hand washing as ``an efficient and economical way to prevent diseases’’.
``Global Hand Washing Day will reach many people across the globe with messages about hand washing.
``The organisation behind Global Hand Washing Day, the Global Public-Private Partnership for Hand Washing (PPPHW), encourages everyone to join in the celebration of empowering people to save lives,” Akinsote said.
Also speaking, the Clinical Compliance Officer at St. Nicolas Hospital, Lagos, Mrs Nkechi Anyanwu, said that the campaign was to educate mothers on the importance of hand washing.
Anyanwu said that an `infective control initiative’ of the hospital tagged: ``My Clean Hands” was to enjoin other organisations globally to celebrate the Global Hand Washing Day.
She said that hand washing was the most effective way to prevent the spread of various types of infection and illness in the community.
